Don McLean

Don McLean

On Saturday night, Don McLean paid a visit to our local theatre, and Mary, Sam, my Dad, my Step-mum and I went along to see him. Despite a pretty slow start (including a somewhat painful rendition of Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be The Day”) the pace soon picked up, the band got into the flow of things, and by the time the old classics came out the crowd was whooping with delight. Well, kind of. Bear in mind that those “old classics” were first recorded 30-odd years ago and you’ll get some idea of the average age of the audience…

It was a fun couple of hours, topped off with what seemed like a half-hour sing-along version of “American Pie”. Despite the rumours that fly around the internet saying that he now hates the song (debunked on his own site, by the way), he genuinely seemed to enjoy playing the song that made him an overnight millionaire. Especially as it meant he could take a breather and let the audience sing for him.

Congratulations to Kary and Nick who did the whole ‘I will’ thing on Saturday. It was a superb day, and ‘my wife and I’ wish the new couple the very best of luck in their new life. The now-customary gallery site is up and running at http://gallery.20thoctober.co.uk. If you were there and have photos to share, please get in touch with Anthony or me and we’ll sort out upload access.

Taken at Hever Castle in Kent. I remember going there as a child and being a bit frustrated by being told which way to walk round the castle, but enjoying the maze. Well, this time I was a bit frustrated by being told which way to walk round the castle, but I did enjoy the maze. They’ve added a ‘water’ maze now, too, and although it plays out like a challenge from a low(er) budget version of Raven, it kept the kids amused till hometime or until they were soaked and shivering, which can’t be bad.
